Warming Center Needs Volunteers
The Stevens Point Warming Center is now open. Taking the lead is the Evergreen Community Initiative (ECI) and the Intercession Episcopal Church who are offering the use of their space downtown. The center opened on Tuesday, November 1. The warming center with volunteers, will give people a warm place away from the elements.
Homelessness is on the rise in the country, and this includes Stevens Point. Because of this steady rise, the Hope Center has often been at capacity and people have been sleeping unsheltered. Keeping these people off the streets, out of jail, and safe is not easy and needs the support of volunteers like you.
How can you get involved and help? Consider filling a shift as a volunteer. Shifts run from 8:30 pm – 1:30 am, and 1:30 am to 6:00 am with two volunteers per shift. In addition, there will be intake staff present to assist the volunteers and guests. What is important is having enough volunteers throughout this winter season to truly make a difference in this community.
The Warming Center has a meager budget and monies are needed for rent, utilities, and a small stipend all to keep the center operating and healthy. We accept monthly sponsors, one time gifts, and church offerings to help support the shelter. If you are interested in any way, please contact us with any questions you may have. You can sign up to volunteer, donate or both by visiting our website www.wisconsinECI.org (under Programs for the Warming Center) or by e-mail Smileforchristsake@yahoo.com.
