There is a quote that I have on my Pinterest board that says “The only time you should look into a neighbor’s bowl is to make sure that they have enough.” That is a good reminder isn’t it? It is easy for us sometimes, to look around and think that others have it better than us, but that is not why we are here.
We are not here to compete with, keep up with, or be envious of others – we are here to be our very best selves. That may look different for every single person, but once we focus on being and doing our best each day, our lives will be filled with contentment.
It is important, too, not to confuse “doing your best” with “doing everything perfect”. No one has achieved complete perfection. No one ever will. Not in work, not with families, not even in sports. Some of us recently watched a two-time NBA MVP lose a very important basketball game. Nobody is perfect. My niece had a dance instructor that did not believe in the phrase “practice makes perfect”, instead she told her students “practice makes progress”. I couldn’t agree more.
We are all on this bumpy, winding, imperfect journey through life, and some days will be easier than others. Some people will have more than others, but we need to focus on living our own very best life and only worry about what someone else has when we are making sure that they have enough.
